Mexico’s Growing Concern

Mexican officials had been concerned that they would lose territory to the US even before the Texas war for independence. Once Texas had won its independence from Mexico without the help of the US, Mexico’s fears about what could happen next intensified. Between 1836 and 1845, Mexico did everything in its power to dissuade the US from annexing the land that had so recently belonged to it.

One of the biggest points of contention between Texas and Mexico was how much of the territory belonged to Texas and how much belonged to Mexico. The total region in question would have more than doubled Texas. On its own, Texas did not pose much of a threat when it came to forcing Mexico to relinquish territory. That would change, however, if the US were to annex it. Besides fighting for their new state, Americans under the newly elected President Polk were seeking to bring to fruition the idea of Manifest Destiny. The Louisiana Purchase had helped to make this closer to reality during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency, but the US was now eyeing Mexican territory in an effort to fulfill what they thought was right and inevitable.
